Urgent Power Outage Strikes Over 27,000 Customers in P.E.I.
UPDATE: More than 27,000 customers are currently without electricity across central and western Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), as a significant power outage unfolds this evening. The outage, confirmed by Maritime Electric, began affecting areas from North Cape to the Charlottetown region shortly before 9 p.m. local time.
Electrical crews have been dispatched to assess the situation and restore power as quickly as possible. Areas in both Prince County and Queens County are experiencing widespread outages, with scattered reports of issues also emerging from Kings County.
The city of Summerside, which operates its own electric utility, has confirmed that it is also grappling with outages, affecting the entire city and surrounding regions. A social media update from the city stated that their crews are actively working on the problem.
Residents are urged to stay tuned for updates as the situation develops. Officials emphasize the importance of safety during this outage, advising customers to avoid downed power lines and report any issues to the utility company immediately.
This incident raises further concerns regarding the reliability of P.E.I.’s power grid, especially as MLAs from three political parties have recently called for a comprehensive review of the system.
As the power restoration efforts are underway, residents are left grappling with the immediate impacts of this outage on their daily lives, including disruptions to heating, lighting, and connectivity. Stay connected for the latest developments as authorities work to resolve this urgent situation.
