Urgent: Protests Erupt as LAPS Shelter Eviction Order Delayed
DEVELOPING: An urgent protest unfolded outside Langley Township city hall on Monday afternoon, with over 60 supporters rallying for the Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS). The demonstrators waved signs and chanted in response to a recent joint announcement from LAPS and the Township regarding a crucial eviction order.
Earlier today, authorities confirmed that the municipal order requiring LAPS to vacate the Patti Dale Animal Shelter in Aldergrove has been temporarily stayed. This decision allows for further negotiations between the two parties, providing a brief respite in a contentious situation that has deeply affected the community.
Protest organizer Lalila Hamelin, a passionate supporter of LAPS, expressed her frustration over the announcement, labeling it “B.S.” She noted that the new terms indicate LAPS may relinquish enforcement responsibilities, a significant shift that the Township has been advocating for amid the eviction order. “We have to be there for the animals,” Hamelin declared. “I don’t care about politics. We all care about the animals and what’s going to happen. There’s no clear indication of what’s going to happen.”
Present at the protest was Phil Dale, husband of the late Patti Dale for whom the shelter is named. He described the eviction attempt as “sad” and expressed hope that the situation would resolve favorably. “Hopefully, they’ll resolve something,” Dale told the Langley Advance Times.
The protest underscores the growing tensions surrounding animal welfare in the region and the local government’s role in overseeing such organizations. With negotiations ongoing, community members are left anxiously awaiting the next steps in this urgent matter that directly impacts the welfare of countless animals.
As the situation develops, all eyes remain on Langley Township and LAPS, with supporters urging the local government to prioritize animal welfare in any final decision. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story that has captured the community’s heart and attention.
