UPDATE: Two chimney fires in Halifax today have prompted urgent safety reminders from officials as colder weather drives residents to use heating appliances.

In a rapid response, Halifax firefighters were dispatched twice on December 7, 2023. The first call came in the morning to a residence on Purcells Cove Road, where reports of smoke indicated a serious issue. Fire crews arrived swiftly and contained the flames, determining that a backed-up fireplace was the culprit.

Later the same day, another alarming call was made regarding a chimney fire on Preston Street. Firefighters again acted quickly, preventing the blaze from spreading and ensuring the safety of the home.

With colder weather settling in, many households are turning to wood stoves, fireplaces, and other heating appliances,”

stated the Halifax Professional Fire Fighters via a post on X.

Officials are emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance to avoid such dangerous situations. “Regular maintenance goes a long way to help prevent fires,” they added, urging residents to be vigilant as winter approaches.

These incidents serve as a critical reminder of fire safety, especially as many households increase their use of heating sources. Residents are encouraged to check their fireplaces and heating systems to avoid similar emergencies.

As the temperature drops, stay alert and prioritize safety to protect your home and loved ones.
