Urgent Repairs at Coal City Intermediate Ahead of Schedule
UPDATE: Repairs at Coal City Intermediate School are progressing ahead of schedule, raising hopes for a return of fourth- and fifth-grade classes by the 2026-27 school year. The school has been closed since October 30, 2024, due to significant structural damage discovered in the roof trusses following an inspection prompted by a visible crack in the north wall.
In a recent announcement, officials confirmed that Performance Services is on track with the $4.9 million renovation project, funded by a bond approved by the Coal City Community School District 1 board in 2023. The urgency of these repairs comes as the community looks forward to bringing students back to their historic school, which has served thousands since its construction in 1916.
The renovation includes a complete roof replacement and extensive gymnasium upgrades. As of now, the roof and part of the north wall have been removed, following necessary asbestos abatement. The chimney on the north side was meticulously dismantled over a week to prepare for the new roof, which is expected to be installed soon. Steel for the roof is set to arrive in early November, allowing crews to cover the building before winter.
Local officials have expressed gratitude for community patience and support throughout the past year. The immediate stabilization of the damaged structure was financed by a $130,000 insurance payout, confirming the damage stemmed from a storm system that impacted the area in July 2024.
The school’s renovation will transform the 8,300-square-foot space into a multi-use center, including a new band/music room in what was previously the stage area. Interestingly, during the demolition process, crews uncovered memorabilia from past events, including programs from basketball tournaments and graduation ceremonies dating back to the 1960s.
The district aims to have the repairs substantially complete by July 2026, ensuring a timely reopening for the first day of school in August. As renovations continue, discussions are also underway regarding the long-term viability of both the intermediate and elementary schools, with a focus on potential new facilities for second- to fifth-grade students.
Residents are urged to stay informed as this significant project unfolds, promising to breathe new life into a cherished community institution. The progress made thus far not only reflects the resilience of the school district but also the unwavering support of the Coal City community.
