UPDATE: In a dramatic rescue operation, nearly 20 dogs were saved from a blazing fire that engulfed a home in Newport Station, N.S. on Saturday night. The fire was reported at approximately 6:30 p.m. AT, leading to a massive response from around 40 firefighters, including teams from neighboring departments.

The Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department chief, Brett Tetanish, noted that in his 35 years as a volunteer firefighter, he has never encountered a situation quite like this. “Every time I looked, there seemed to be a firefighter bringing another dog out of the home,” he said, reflecting on the overwhelming number of rescues. Tragically, one dog did not survive the fire.

Residents were not present when the fire broke out, and the cause remains unclear, although it has been classified as accidental. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze primarily to the kitchen area, but smoke and water damage affected the entire home. Nearby residents experienced smoke inhalation; however, they are believed to be recovering.

Special oxygen masks were utilized for the dogs during the rescue. Tetanish emphasized the significance of the firefighters’ efforts, stating, “It was heartwarming to see that there’s that much care from the firefighters toward the dogs.” Despite the availability of animal-specific oxygen masks, there were not enough for all the dogs, necessitating the use of masks designed for humans.

Veterinary technicians from a local animal hospital were on-site to assist in the care and stabilization of the rescued dogs, which included a litter of puppies. These animals were subsequently transported to emergency clinics in the Halifax area for further treatment.

As the community rallies around the aftermath of this incident, the emotional impact is palpable. The heroic efforts of the firefighters and veterinary staff showcase a powerful commitment to animal welfare, even in the face of danger.

The situation remains dynamic as investigations into the fire’s cause continue. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward, while the community reflects on this remarkable rescue and the bond formed between humans and their four-legged companions.
