Urgent Rescue: Hiker Injured on Mt. Arrowsmith This Weekend
UPDATE: An injured hiker was successfully rescued from Mt. Arrowsmith Regional Park this weekend, following an urgent operation involving multiple volunteer rescue teams. On January 31, the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue coordinated efforts to locate the hiker, who suffered a leg injury after going off the established trail.
The rescue mission began when authorities were alerted that the hiker had lost their footing on a steep section of the terrain. Rescuers quickly identified the hiker’s location between the Rousseau Trail and the Saddle Trail. Despite the hiker being equipped with essential safety gear, including communication devices, conditions proved challenging due to strong winds that hindered air support from a helicopter and a hoist team.
Ground teams rushed to the scene, deploying first aid, a utility terrain vehicle, and the Alberni Rescue Squad’s new command truck to facilitate the rescue. The hiker, who remains unnamed, was able to maintain contact with rescuers throughout the operation, showcasing the importance of preparedness in outdoor adventures.
This incident serves as a critical reminder for hikers to remain on marked trails and avoid hiking alone. The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad highlighted that hiking solo can lead to psychological challenges in emergencies, increasing the risk of injury due to decision fatigue.
As of now, the hiker’s condition has not been disclosed, but authorities stress the importance of safety measures while enjoying the great outdoors. The community is urged to share this message widely, reinforcing the need for caution and preparation when exploring nature.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as rescue teams continue to emphasize safe hiking practices.
