Urgent Rescue Operations Underway as Landslides Kill 24 in India
UPDATE: Rescuers are urgently searching for missing individuals in the Darjeeling region of India after devastating landslides claimed at least 24 lives on Sunday. Following heavy downpours, teams from the Indian Army and disaster response forces have mobilized to locate those feared trapped beneath significant debris.
The landslides, which occurred in India’s northeastern tea-growing district, have severely disrupted local communities, with officials confirming that road damage has hindered access to several affected villages. Udayan Guha, the West Bengal state development minister, stated that rescue operations are ongoing, with workers employing earth-moving equipment to clear the rubble.
Television reports show rescue teams working tirelessly amidst the chaos, as heavy rainfall continues to pose challenges. The relentless downpours have not only destroyed homes and infrastructure but have also left hundreds of tourists stranded in Darjeeling. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reported that two iron bridges collapsed due to the extreme weather, further complicating rescue efforts.
As of now, the Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted persistent heavy rainfall in the region until Tuesday, raising concerns for additional landslides and flooding. This recent disaster follows a tragic pattern in South Asia, where flash floods and landslides have resulted in significant loss of life and property. Just last month, an entire village was swept away in Uttarakhand, and neighboring Nepal reported 44 fatalities from mudslides and flooding linked to similar weather conditions.
Experts warn that human-caused climate change is exacerbating the intensity of monsoon seasons in South Asia, leading to unpredictable and extreme weather patterns. The once-reliable monsoon rains now arrive in sudden bursts, causing extensive damage in short timeframes.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with the public and local officials calling for urgent support and resources to aid ongoing rescue operations. As the search for the missing intensifies, communities remain hopeful for a positive outcome amidst this challenging crisis.
Stay tuned for more updates as rescue efforts progress and more information becomes available.
