Urgent: Schools Closed, 19,000 Without Power as Storm Hits Nova Scotia

UPDATE: A fierce storm is currently battering parts of Nova Scotia, leading to widespread school closures and power outages. As of this morning, over 19,000 customers across the province are without electricity due to heavy snow, rain, and fierce winds.

Schools within the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education and Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education are closed today as officials prioritize student safety. The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education has also confirmed that all schools in Digby County are shut down, while schools in Yarmouth and Shelburne remain open. The South Shore Regional Centre for Education reports that the Forest Heights family of schools is closed, and additional closures include École Rose-des-Vents in Greenwood and École acadienne de Truro.

The storm, classified as a nor’easter, is expected to drop up to 30 centimetres of snow in northern Nova Scotia, with some areas of northern Cape Breton anticipating up to 50 centimetres. Additionally, the Atlantic coast is bracing for heavy rainfall of up to 45 millimetres and wind gusts reaching 80 kilometres per hour.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for northern regions, advising residents to prepare for hazardous conditions. The power outage map indicates that crews are mobilizing to restore service, but significant delays are anticipated due to the ongoing severe weather.

Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
