Urgent Search for Missing Man After Jet Ski Accident in Toronto
UPDATE: A desperate search is underway for a missing man who disappeared after a Jet Ski accident at Bluffer’s Park in Toronto on the night of August 27, 2023. The incident unfolded when the man, approximately 20 years old, and a woman fell off their rented Jet Ski around 9:15 p.m.. Authorities report that the man selflessly gave his life-jacket to the woman, who was later rescued by a passing Jet Skier.
The woman, who had limited swimming ability, was reported to have cried out for help after the fall. Fortunately, a nearby rider came to her aid, allowing her to return to shore safely. Tragically, the man remains unaccounted for, prompting urgent searches by both the Toronto police’s marine unit and the Canadian Coast Guard. Duty Insp. Lhawang Jongdong stated, “It’s hard to fathom anyone finding him alive at this point.”
As the search efforts continue, the family of the missing man is described as “devastated” yet “optimistic and hopeful” for a safe return. The night-time conditions at the marina have posed significant challenges for search teams, according to Jongdong. Investigators are examining the rental agreements and safety practices of the Jet Ski company involved, particularly why both riders were permitted to go out with only one life-jacket.
Authorities are deeply concerned about the safety protocols related to personal watercraft rentals following a surge in complaints this summer. Raj Mehta, CEO of the rental company Jetti, highlighted serious safety violations, stating, “The fact that there was only one life-jacket is very concerning.” He emphasized that regulations require both the operator and passenger to wear life-jackets at all times.
Moreover, it is crucial to note that the two individuals should not have been on the water after sunset, which occurred at 8 p.m., an hour before the accident. Mehta pointed out that Jet Skis must have navigation lights after dark, which many do not. He criticized the rental company for not enforcing return policies before nightfall.
The police are currently focusing on recovery efforts while investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. They have not yet linked any negligence to the rental company but are thoroughly reviewing the situation. There has been a marked increase in Jet Ski-related accidents, prompting local residents and officials to call for stricter regulations or even a ban on personal watercraft in Toronto’s waterfront areas.
As the investigation unfolds, the community is urged to remain vigilant about safety practices. The tragic event serves as a chilling reminder of the perils associated with personal watercraft rentals, especially when safety measures are overlooked.
Authorities will continue to search for the missing man and provide updates as more information becomes available. The situation remains fluid, and any developments will be closely monitored.
