UPDATE: Environment Canada has just issued an urgent snow squall warning for parts of the Greater Toronto Area, including Newmarket, Georgina, and Northern York. Residents should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions today, with snowfall totals expected to reach between 10 to 20 centimetres.

The snow is projected to continue into the afternoon, particularly affecting areas along and north of a line from Newmarket to Uxbridge to Port Perry. Accompanying this heavy snowfall are strong northwesterly winds, gusting between 50 to 60 km/h, contributing to blowing snow that could severely reduce visibility to near zero at times.

Officials are emphasizing that travel will likely be hazardous, with difficult conditions on roads and walkways. “Conditions are expected to improve this evening,” the warning states, but the immediate situation remains critical, with heavy snow making navigation extremely challenging.

A special weather statement is also in effect for Vaughan, where snowfall accumulations are projected to be lower at around 5 centimetres. However, forecasters caution that even this amount could significantly reduce visibility and complicate travel.

This snow squall warning highlights the dynamic and unpredictable nature of winter weather in the region. Authorities confirm there is notable uncertainty regarding the exact locations of the developing squalls, which could lead to variable accumulation across the area.

Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather information and to avoid non-essential travel during the storm. As conditions develop, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for sudden changes in weather and visibility.

Stay tuned for further updates as Environment Canada monitors the situation closely.
