Urgent: Spooktacular Newton Returns Oct. 25 for Free Halloween Fun!

UPDATE: Surrey’s highly anticipated free Halloween street festival, Spooktacular Newton, returns on Saturday, October 25, 2023, promising a day of family-friendly activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 137 Street (between 74 and 72A Avenue). This year’s event is set to attract over 15,000 attendees and features a variety of attractions including trick-or-treating, a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, mini golf, haunted train rides, and much more.

The Newton Business Improvement Association (BIA) is excited to host the 8th annual celebration, which aims to foster community spirit while offering an array of entertainment options. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume and enjoy the festival’s offerings, including face painting, bouncy castles, and dance performances by City Entertainment.

The urban pumpkin patch returns with over 1,000 pumpkins available for donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Surrey Food Bank. “This year, we’re placing special focus on giving back to the community through our official charity partner, Surrey Food Bank,” stated Philip Aguirre, executive director of the Newton BIA. The Food Bank, which relocated to the Newton area in 2020, will manage the pumpkin patch and accept both monetary and non-perishable food donations.

“It’s a fantastic way to spotlight the vital work they do—especially at this time of year—while connecting the community in a fun and meaningful way,” Aguirre added. The festival is also supported by Envision Financial, the presenting sponsor, whose ongoing commitment helps make Spooktacular a reality.

Originally initiated in 2015, Spooktacular Newton has evolved significantly despite challenges, having been canceled twice due to COVID-19 restrictions. “From humble beginnings in the Save-On-Foods underground parking lot to a city-wide event attracting over 15,000 residents, Spooktacular Newton has grown into a must-attend celebration for families,” Aguirre noted.

As the event approaches, attendees should be aware of street closures from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Festival-goers are encouraged to walk or use public transit, as parking will not be available. “We are a car-free event that encourages you to think about how you get around the city,” according to the BIA’s website.

In addition to exciting activities, a variety of food trucks, including Japadog and Kona Ice of Chilliwack, will be on-site along with numerous local vendors. The festival not only celebrates Halloween but also emphasizes community connection and support for local causes.
