Urgent: Thorncliffe Park Condos Evacuated Amid 4-Alarm Fire
UPDATE: A major fire is currently raging at two condo buildings in Thorncliffe Park, prompting the urgent evacuation of numerous residents. The Toronto Fire Service (TFS) responded to reports of a stubborn four-alarm fire at 11 Thorncliffe Park Dr. shortly after 1:30 p.m. today.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on multiple levels, particularly in the underground areas. Acting Division Commander Robert Hewson confirmed that initial investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical issue. “We found insulation burning in between the walls, making it a very stubborn, slow fire,” Hewson stated.
As the situation escalated, Toronto Hydro crews were dispatched to cut power to the affected buildings, which include 21 Overlea Blvd. The fire has raised levels of dangerous carbon monoxide, prompting precautionary evacuations of floors three, four, and five in one building, as well as select penthouses in the other. Residents have been moved to safety in TTC buses.
Approximately 70 units have been displaced, but the exact number of residents affected is still being confirmed. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time. “We’re still working on containment and have Toronto Hydro testing the hydro systems,” Hewson noted. “It’s too early to determine when residents may safely return.”
Residents are understandably anxious. Sheen Sotea, a resident at 21 Overlea Blvd, described her fright when the fire alarm sounded, initially thinking it was a drill. “When I smelled smoke, I knew it was serious,” she told CP24. Another resident, Anna Arella, found herself struggling to complete her schoolwork during the power outage. “It’s exam season, so it’s been hard not being able to charge my computer,” she expressed.
Toronto Hydro has stated that once the fire is under control, they will evaluate the impacted equipment and plan for repairs. “For safety, we disconnected power to the damaged equipment, affecting less than 20 customers, including some multi-residential buildings,” they announced. However, they have not provided an estimated time for restoration.
This situation is developing rapidly, and officials are actively working to manage the fire and its aftermath. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
