Urgent Update: Bear Destroyed After Chilliwack Feeding Incident

UPDATE: A mother bear in Chilliwack, B.C., was tragically destroyed after officials confirmed that a resident was caught hand feeding her and two cubs in a residential neighborhood. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service announced this devastating news just hours ago, stating that the actions of one individual created a serious public safety threat.
The incident has raised alarms among wildlife officials, as they emphasize the dangers of feeding wild animals. In a recent social media post, the conservation officers stated, “As a direct result from this individual feeding the family unit of bears, the sow had to be destroyed, and the two cubs were taken to a rehabilitation center for relocation next spring.”
Feeding bears is strictly prohibited under B.C.’s Wildlife Act, and violators face severe consequences, including potential fines of up to $100,000 and possible jail time. This incident is not isolated; in 2023, a West Vancouver resident was fined $5,000 for feeding a black bear, while another case in Whistler resulted in a woman initially fined $60,000—a penalty that was later reduced to $10,500 on appeal.
The Chilliwack investigation is ongoing, and officials are urging residents to refrain from engaging in behaviors that put both wildlife and public safety at risk. “Wildlife fed by humans lose their sense of fear and begin to associate people with food,” the conservation officers warned, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy distance from wild animals.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact human actions can have on wildlife. The destruction of the mother bear not only affects her cubs but also raises concerns about the ongoing safety of the community. Residents are urged to report any sightings of bears behaving unusually or approaching human habitation.
As authorities continue their investigation, it is critical for the community to remain vigilant and informed. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
