Urgent Update: Cambridge Council Meetings Remain Virtual Due to Threats

URGENT UPDATE: The City of Cambridge has announced that members of the public will remain barred from attending council meetings in person for another week due to “heightened security measures.” This decision comes as the council prepares for two statutory meetings on October 7 and October 8, 2023, which will proceed virtually for public participation.
Officials confirm that while councillors and staff will convene in person, the public can only engage through online platforms. A representative from City Hall stated, “Heightened security measures remain in place to ensure a safe and respectful environment for Council, staff and community members.”
This ongoing restriction follows a recent incident involving a “threatening voicemail” directed at the council. In response, city officials collaborated with Waterloo Regional Police, who confirmed that the individual responsible was located and banned from all City of Cambridge properties. Police reported that there were no grounds for criminal charges or arrests related to this incident.
The transition to virtual-only meetings began last month after the council’s session on September 23 was switched to an online format, marking a significant shift in how local governance is conducted amidst safety concerns. This change also coincided with the implementation of a new bag check policy, aimed at enhancing security at public gatherings.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to participate virtually to voice their opinions and concerns. The council’s decision underscores the ongoing commitment to safety while balancing the need for public engagement in local governance.
Watch for updates on how the City of Cambridge addresses these security concerns and what measures may be implemented moving forward.
