Urgent Update: Fire Near Summerland Under Control After Lightning
UPDATE: As of 8:49 p.m., crews from the BC Wildfire Service have successfully gained control over a wildfire that sparked north of Summerland. This urgent development comes after the fire, initially discovered at 5:12 p.m., was reported as out of control earlier today.
The small fire, located near Darke Creek and east of Fish Lake Road above Garnett Valley, is estimated to cover just 0.1 hectares. It is believed to have been ignited by a lightning strike during a severe thunderstorm affecting the Okanagan area.
At 7:56 p.m., the BC Wildfire Service confirmed the fire’s size remained at 0.1 hectares. Two initial attack crews and two helicopters were dispatched to combat the blaze, with additional aerial support deployed as necessary. Witnesses reported seeing helicopters from Eclipse Helicopters in Penticton rapidly responding to the scene.
The situation is critical, as a severe thunderstorm watch is currently in effect for the region, raising concerns about further lightning and strong winds. Yesterday alone, there were an estimated 14,000 lightning strikes across the province, with more anticipated today, especially in the Southern Interior.
What’s Next: Residents are urged to stay vigilant as the BC Wildfire Service continues to monitor conditions. The agency’s provincial situation report indicates that ongoing weather threats pose a significant risk for new fires. Local authorities are advising the public to stay informed and prepare for potential evacuations if necessary.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops. Your safety is our priority, and we will provide the latest information as it becomes available.
