Urgent Update: FPDI Transforms Plumbing Dreams into Careers
UPDATE: In a remarkable development for aspiring plumbers, First People’s Development Inc. (FPDI) is paving the way for career opportunities through its innovative training programs. The organization is currently transforming the lives of young adults like Ayden Dyck, who is one step closer to his dream of becoming a plumber.
Dyck, now 21, recalls fond memories of his father, Rob Dyck, tackling household plumbing issues. “I always wanted to do something with plumbing when I grew up,” he shared, highlighting the personal drive that fuels his ambition.
Earlier this year, Dyck enrolled in a pre-employment plumbing program offered by FPDI in collaboration with the Piping Industry Technical College of Manitoba (PITC). The 10-month program provides students with the latest plumbing techniques and hands-on experience, covering essential skills like pipe cutting, installation of valves, and blueprint reading.
Participants benefit from free tuition, making this opportunity accessible to qualifying applicants. Dyck learned about the program from his older brother, Mac Dyck, a Level 2 carpenter who discovered it online. He quickly applied, was accepted, and began studying in April 2023.
The FPDI program stands out not only for its comprehensive curriculum but also for its small class size. Dyck was one of just nine students, allowing for personalized instruction from expert teacher Craig Gertley. “Whoever needed extra help, he’d go and make sure you understood it,” Dyck explained, emphasizing the supportive learning environment that enhanced his educational experience.
On a significant career milestone, Dyck was hired by Servco Service in September 2023. While currently working as a trainee managing tools and logistics, he is eager to transition into an apprentice role within the next few months. “I want to become a certified steamfitter and work with high-pressure piping systems,” he stated, sharing his ambition to travel and explore job opportunities across the industry.
Looking ahead, FPDI plans to launch a new Plumbing course and a Sprinkler Fitter course in April 2026, continuing its mission to empower individuals through education and training. The organization partners with 28 Manitoba First Nations communities to deliver impactful training-to-employment programs, making a measurable difference in local economies.
This latest initiative not only opens doors for young professionals like Ayden Dyck but also addresses the growing demand for skilled tradespeople in the region. For more information about FPDI’s programs and to learn how to apply, visit their official website.
As the plumbing industry evolves, the importance of such training programs cannot be overstated. They are vital for fostering a skilled workforce ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
