UPDATE: The investigation into the tragic crash at Portillo’s restaurant in Oswego, which claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy on July 30, 2023, is now expected to take several more weeks. Oswego Police spokesperson Cathy Nevara confirmed the ongoing probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On that fateful day, a 2011 Lincoln MKZ Sedan crashed into the restaurant’s entrance, injuring 13 victims inside, including the toddler. While eight individuals were hospitalized, Nevara reported that all have since been discharged. Tragically, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, with preliminary autopsy findings indicating death from multiple traumatic injuries.

The driver, a 50-year-old woman from Canton, Michigan, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Authorities have yet to determine if she experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin stated that the investigation remains ongoing, as the Kane County Coroner’s office is also involved in examining the circumstances of the toddler’s death.

In response to the incident, the restaurant has reopened its drive-thru and dining area, but safety measures are being intensified. Village President Ryan Kauffman announced that Portillo’s plans to install bollards at the entrance, which are short vertical posts designed to manage traffic in pedestrian-heavy areas. “They’re going to do that on their own,” Kauffman stated after the August 4 Oswego Village Board meeting.

The village has initiated a review of its ordinances and safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies. Kauffman emphasized the importance of enhancing safety measures, saying, “I’ve asked staff to start looking at our current and existing ordinances to see what we have on the books already.”

Village trustee Rachelle Koenig echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need to honor the young boy’s life by ensuring such incidents do not happen again. A growing memorial has been established outside the restaurant, a poignant reminder of the tragedy that struck the community.

Residents and officials alike are urged to stay informed as the investigation progresses and to participate in discussions about improving safety measures in public areas. The Oswego Police Department is actively seeking any additional information related to the incident.

This developing story sheds light on the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols in commercial areas, especially those frequented by families. Updates will continue as more information becomes available.
