Urgent Upgrade: $100,000 Boost for Shuswap Boat Launches

UPDATE: Major improvements are on the horizon for two key boat launches in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, as officials just announced a funding boost of up to $100,000 for essential upgrades. This decision was made during the board meeting on September 18, aimed at enhancing access for local boaters and visitors alike.

The upgrades will specifically target the boat launch and dock at Harbour Road, along with the dock replacement at Markwart Road. The Harbour Road site has rapidly gained popularity, with its 20-metre wide and 100-metre long launch, which features a public vault toilet, garbage receptacles, and a 60-ft. dock for temporary boat loading. However, it faces seasonal closures from October 1 to March 31 due to spawning salmon.

Meanwhile, the Markwart Road Boat Launch, located in Sorrento, remains open year-round, offering similar facilities including a vault toilet, parking for 11 vehicles and boat trailers, and a dock for temporary moorage.

Denise Ackerman, Community Parks & Recreation Coordinator, emphasized the urgent need for these upgrades, highlighting that both the Harbour Road launch and docks at both locations are over 20 years old and deteriorating. “In particular, the launch at Harbour Road is in disrepair, and during periods of low lake levels has required closure during the boating season,” she stated. Furthermore, the existing fibreglass docks do not comply with current provincial regulations.

Originally, a budget of $125,000 was allocated for the Harbour Road upgrades and $25,000 for the Markwart dock. However, quotes for the projects came in significantly higher at $192,436, prompting the board to seek additional funding. The board’s unanimous decision for the requested $100,000 will secure the necessary funds to move forward with the critical renovations.

The next steps involve staff securing quotations and ensuring that these much-needed projects are completed as swiftly as possible. With boating season fast approaching, the improvements promise to enhance safety, accessibility, and enjoyment for all users.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Columbia Shuswap Regional District works to finalize plans and timelines for these vital upgrades!
