UPDATE: Authorities in Lloydminster have issued an urgent warning about counterfeit currency being circulated in the Alberta-Saskatchewan border city. Since mid-August 2023, police have received seven reports of fake Canadian bills, primarily $50 and $100 notes, being used in local businesses.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have released images of individuals suspected of using these counterfeit bills. “Local businesses are encouraged to carefully inspect $50 and $100 bills before accepting them,” the RCMP stated in a news release on Wednesday. The police emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging merchants to utilize resources and training materials provided by the Bank of Canada to verify the security features on Canadian currency.

The counterfeit activity poses a significant risk to local businesses and consumers alike, heightening concerns within the community. The RCMP has called on anyone with information regarding the suspects or the counterfeit bills to contact them directly at 780-808-8400. Those wishing to remain anonymous can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

As this situation develops, residents are reminded to remain alert and report any suspicious activity. This warning serves as a critical reminder for the community to protect themselves against financial fraud. Stay tuned for updates as authorities work diligently to track down those responsible.
