UPDATE: Toronto police have issued an urgent warning to Blue Jays fans amid a surge in fake World Series tickets as the team heads towards the postseason. With the excitement building for the upcoming games, scammers are exploiting the heightened demand, targeting unsuspecting fans.

The Toronto Police Service released a public advisory on July 12, 2023, emphasizing that major sporting events frequently attract fraudsters. These scammers often appear as legitimate sellers on social media platforms, classified websites, and counterfeit ticketing sites, offering tickets that are either fake, duplicated, or do not exist at all. Victims are left devastated after making payments, only to find the seller has vanished, leaving them without tickets and out of pocket.

Authorities warn fans to be vigilant against common scams including:
– Fake resale websites
– Phony electronic tickets
– Requests for payment via e-transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards

These payment methods complicate tracking efforts, making it easier for fraudsters to disappear.

Fans are urged to recognize the red flags that signal potential scams. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, sellers who create a false sense of urgency, and unverified links shared online. The police specifically caution against making payments outside of secure platforms, and advise against sharing images of tickets, which can be duplicated.

The Financial Crimes Unit strongly recommends purchasing tickets only from trusted sources such as the Blue Jays’ official website, MLB.com, or Ticketmaster. Additionally, using credit cards can provide added protection against fraud.

If you or someone you know has fallen victim to this scam, contact the Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.222tips.com for assistance.

With the playoffs approaching, fans are reminded to stay alert and protect themselves from potential scams. Don’t let fraudsters ruin your World Series experience—stay informed and buy smart!
