UPDATE: Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has just announced a groundbreaking deployment of the Deep Turnaround AI platform, aiming to revolutionize real-time ground operations. This innovative technology, developed by Aviation Solutions, a subsidiary of Royal Schiphol Group, is set to enhance the efficiency and reliability of aircraft turnarounds, a critical window that directly impacts passenger experience.

With immediate effect, YVR will integrate Deep Turnaround to monitor and optimize the aircraft turnaround process, which includes vital operations such as baggage handling, refueling, and boarding. The AI system utilizes two high-tech cameras positioned outside aircraft gates, providing comprehensive coverage and insights to minimize delays by up to 30%. This development is crucial as the airport prepares for a record-breaking year, with 18.176 million passengers recorded through August 2025, surpassing last year’s totals.

According to Andy Margolis, Vice President of Operations and COO for Vancouver Airport Authority, “Investing in digital technologies is a key part of YVR’s innovation strategy.” He emphasized that this move will support more predictable and efficient service for both passengers and airline customers, aligning with the airport’s goal to enhance long-term performance.

The integration of Deep Turnaround also builds on YVR’s existing Digital Twin initiative, a virtual replica of the airport that allows for real-time operational monitoring. At Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), which has successfully utilized Deep Turnaround, operators can anticipate potential delays at specific gates up to 15 minutes in advance. This capability allows for proactive adjustments, such as reallocating gates for inbound flights, significantly reducing last-minute changes that can disrupt operations.

The application of this AI system has also transformed ground handling logistics. For instance, Swissport, a major cargo handling service, reported a substantial decline in the need for coordinators to make frequent calls, streamlining their operations dramatically. Now, YVR is set to gain similar advantages as it adopts this advanced technology.

“YVR joins a global community of airports transforming airside operations,” stated Caroline Massart, Head of Aviation Solutions. This partnership with Royal Schiphol Group places YVR at the forefront of a growing network of airports harnessing AI to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

Additionally, major airlines such as Air Canada are eagerly adopting this technology to refine their operational performance. Anna McMurdo, Manager of Global On-Time Performance Solutions at Air Canada, expressed excitement about leveraging Deep Turnaround to gain better insights into turnaround activities, ultimately improving estimated departure times.

The initial rollout of Deep Turnaround will occur at select gates, with plans for phased expansion as passenger and cargo volumes continue to rise. YVR aims to utilize these data-driven innovations to support sustainable growth and ensure a seamless travel experience for its passengers.

As of August 2025, YVR has already recorded a notable increase in passenger traffic, with 2.648 million travelers in August alone, up from 2.611 million in the same month last year. The airport is on pace to surpass its all-time passenger record of 26.4 million set in 2019, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced operational strategies to accommodate growing demand.
