Vancouver Cyclists Raise Over $25K for Cancer Research in Iceland Trek
UPDATE: Vancouver residents Christian Jones and Matt Braun are making headlines as they embark on a monumental cycling journey in Iceland to raise funds for cancer research. Their initiative, the Westfjord Charity Ride, has already exceeded its goal, raising over $25,000 just days before the ride begins.
This urgent mission was sparked by personal experiences with cancer. Hannah Jones, Christian’s wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 29 years old, revealing she carries the BRCA gene, which significantly increases cancer risk. In a devastating twist, Hannah’s sister, Bethany, was also diagnosed shortly after. Both women faced the harrowing journey of treatment together, supported by the BC Cancer Foundation, and emerged victorious.
Fueled by their triumph, Christian and Hannah joined the Ride to Conquer Cancer, discovering a shared passion for cycling as a means to fight back against the disease. Together with lifelong friend Matt, they launched the Westfjord Charity Ride, aiming to raise a significant sum for cancer research. With the ride set to cover a staggering 925 kilometers through Iceland’s rugged Westfjords in just eight days, the duo is prepared to tackle the physical and emotional challenges ahead.
As they set off, they anticipate grueling conditions, including strong winds and rain, reminiscent of climbing Mount Seymour twice each day. The trek is dedicated to every cancer survivor, fighter, and loved one affected by the disease, proving that resilience can conquer any terrain.
Christian expressed the emotional significance of this journey, stating, “We are riding not just for ourselves but for all those who have faced this battle. This is about showing that hope and strength can shine even in the darkest times.”
The Westfjord Charity Ride is not just a cycling event; it’s a beacon of hope and solidarity in the fight against cancer. As the ride approaches, support continues to pour in from the community, amplifying the call for cancer research funding.
Stay tuned as we follow Christian and Matt on their inspiring journey, proving that courage and determination can make a difference. The ride begins this week, and with the community’s support, they are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
This is an urgent reminder of the power of resilience in the face of adversity, and a call to action for everyone to support cancer research initiatives.
