Vancouver Goldeneyes Dominate with First Shutout, 4-0 Victory
UPDATE: The Vancouver Goldeneyes have kicked off their inaugural season in the Professional Women’s Hockey League with a groundbreaking 4-0 victory over the New York Sirens, marking their first shutout in franchise history on December 6, 2025. This decisive win showcases the team’s potential as they thrive on home ice.
Emerance Maschmeyer, the Goldeneyes’ goalie, delivered an impressive performance by stopping all 28 shots from the Sirens, solidifying her role in this historic matchup at Pacific Coliseum. The energy from the home crowd of 9,502 attendees was palpable, fueling the team’s momentum throughout the game.
Jenn Gardiner made headlines by scoring her first goal as a Goldeneye with a short-handed strike, contributing to a strong home performance. “It’s pretty special. There’s a lot of people here so to get on the scoresheet feels good,” Gardiner stated. Her goal was part of a three-goal burst in the first period.
With this victory, the Goldeneyes improved to 2-0 at home after facing three consecutive losses on the road. Head coach Brian Idalski emphasized the importance of the home crowd, saying, “The ability of us to feed off (the crowd) and what it means to have that kind of support, it’s special already.”
Saturday’s game also celebrated “Kids Takeover Day,” highlighting the positive impact of professional hockey on young fans and aspiring athletes. Maschmeyer noted, “We inspire them, but honestly they inspire us.” The local players, including Gardiner from Surrey, B.C., showcased their skills in front of supportive hometown fans.
The Goldeneyes’ success is a beacon for women’s hockey in British Columbia, with players like Micah Zandee-Hart and Anne Cherkowski from the New York Sirens relishing the opportunity to compete on their home turf. “You can tell there’s a ton of energy in this building,” Cherkowski remarked, reflecting the growing support for women’s hockey in the region.
This victory builds on the momentum from their thrilling season opener on November 21, where the Goldeneyes edged the Seattle Torrent 4-3 in overtime before an impressive crowd of nearly 15,000 fans. The Goldeneyes’ remarkable start to their inaugural season is not just a win on the scoreboard but a significant step for women’s sports in Canada.
As the Goldeneyes continue to gain traction, fans can look forward to upcoming games where they aim to maintain their home advantage and build on their early success. Stay tuned for more updates as this season unfolds!
