Vancouver Rise FC Faces AFC Toronto in NSL Final Saturday
URGENT UPDATE: Vancouver Rise FC is set to face AFC Toronto in the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) Final this Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11 a.m. PT. The championship match will take place at BMO Field in Toronto, following a thrilling season for the Rise that began with a historic victory.
In the league’s opening match on April 16, Vancouver secured a 1-0 win against Calgary Wild FC, with a goal from Canada national team star Quinn in front of a raucous crowd of approximately 14,000 fans at B.C. Place.
As the team prepares for the final, emotions are running high. “To lift the trophy would be pretty special,” said Rise player Holly Ward in a recent interview. The significance of winning the first-ever NSL championship resonates deeply with players and fans alike.
“Our city is incredibly proud of Vancouver Rise FC for making it to the NSL finals,” stated Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “This team brings so much energy and heart to the game.”
The Rise advanced to the final after a dramatic shootout victory over Ottawa Rapid, showcasing their resilience throughout a challenging season that saw injuries and tough competition. Club president Sinead King commended the unwavering support from their fans, emphasizing the team’s commitment to the future of women’s soccer.
“Perseverance has been key,” noted Mel Bostrom of the Crow Collective, the team’s official supporters group. Despite early season struggles, the Rise has rallied to capture the attention of soccer fans across British Columbia.
Support for the Rise is palpable, with fans eagerly anticipating the match. Anne Kang, B.C. Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, expressed pride in the team’s journey and its impact on young athletes. “Celebrating diversity is a core value of B.C.’s sport system,” Kang said.
In preparation for the match, Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen praised the Rise’s performance and expressed hope for a championship victory. “I think they will do well,” he said, reflecting the optimism shared by supporters.
The teams have faced each other multiple times this season, with their most recent meeting resulting in a 7-0 defeat for the Rise. However, earlier matches demonstrated that both teams are capable of holding their own, setting the stage for an exciting finale.
Whoever wins on Saturday will take home the Diana B. Matheson Cup, named after the league’s co-founder. With kickoff at 11 a.m. PT, fans can tune in for live coverage starting at 10:30 a.m. PT on CBC TV and CBC Gem.
As the clock ticks down to kickoff, the excitement builds—both on the pitch and among eager fans. Vancouver Rise FC is not just competing for a title; they are representing a community passionate about advancing women’s soccer in Canada.
