UPDATE: In an electrifying Week 0 scrimmage on July 28, 2023, the Manteno Panthers hosted the Momence Redskins, showcasing their seasoned quarterbacks as they gear up for the upcoming season. Both teams ran 24 plays each, exchanging positions after every 12 plays, delivering a thrilling preview of what’s to come in Week 1.

This scrimmage is crucial as it marks the beginning of a highly anticipated season. Manteno, coming off a solid 7-3 season and its first playoff berth since 2019, is looking to build on last year’s momentum under the leadership of quarterback Connor Harrod. Harrod, entering his third year as a starter, demonstrated his ability to connect with multiple receivers, a major focus during the offseason.

“We’ve been working all summer on getting chemistry,” Harrod stated. He showcased his skills during the scrimmage, connecting with six different receivers and making impressive plays with his legs. The Panthers’ head coach RJ Haines emphasized the team’s speed, which he believes is unmatched during his tenure.

The speed was on full display when Nick Honkisz sprinted for a 60-yard touchdown on the very first snap. This momentum was further fueled by Briggs Cann, who demonstrated his explosive abilities with another touchdown reception, showcasing the Panthers’ intention to utilize their speed effectively this season.

Meanwhile, Momence is coming off an impressive 8-2 season and a second consecutive playoff appearance, led by veteran quarterback Erick Castillo. In his fourth year as a starter, Castillo kept plays alive with his agility, connecting with key receivers like Eddier Ferreira and Damien Upton. After throwing for 1,814 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, Castillo expressed the importance of the scrimmage, saying, “It feels nice. We needed to see live action and prepare for the week coming up.”

Momence’s head coach Wayne Walker acknowledged the need for improvement, especially on the defensive side. “Live snaps helped us recognize that we need to pick it up a bit,” he said. The Redskins will host Oakwood in their opening game next week, where they won decisively last year, 40-12.

As both teams prepare for their upcoming matches, the excitement is palpable. Manteno will open its season against Sandwich, a rematch from last year that they won 54-32. Coach Haines emphasized the importance of reviewing game footage and refining their strategies ahead of next week.

With the season rapidly approaching, both Manteno and Momence are determined to carry the momentum from this scrimmage into their respective opening games. Fans and players alike are gearing up for what promises to be an exhilarating season of high school football.
