Victoria Council Urged to Adopt Developer Donation Policy Immediately
URGENT UPDATE: North Cowichan Mayor Rob Douglas has just called for an immediate policy to regulate donations from developers to local councils, a move aimed at restoring public trust amid mounting concerns over transparency. This announcement follows troubling findings from Elections BC, revealing that a significant portion of Victoria’s council has accepted contributions from prominent developers while approving an overwhelming majority of development applications.
Mayor Douglas advocates for a clear policy that would require councillors to recuse themselves from decisions involving developers who have financially supported their campaigns. Councillors’ undisclosed meetings with developers have raised alarms about potential conflicts of interest. Currently, over 6,000 housing units have been approved but remain unbuilt, highlighting a critical housing crisis in the region.
Residents are increasingly worried that the current draft of Victoria’s official community plan prioritizes market-driven developments at the expense of affordable housing and tenant protections. Victorians cherish their community’s mature tree-lined streets and diverse population, but these values are at risk as the council leans toward developments that may not serve the needs of households earning between $20,000 and $80,000 annually.
The provincial government has contributed to the issue by eliminating public input on housing developments, further alienating local voices from essential decisions. This has fueled frustration among residents who feel that their concerns are being overlooked.
Pat McGuire, a concerned resident, emphasizes the urgent need for Victoria’s council to implement Douglas’ proposed policy. “Without transparency in developer contributions, how can we expect fair decisions that reflect the needs of our community?” McGuire stated.
As the situation develops, residents and local officials alike are watching closely. The urgency for action has never been clearer. What happens next in Victoria could determine the future of the community’s housing landscape and the preservation of its cherished character.
Local advocates are calling for swift action from the council to ensure that future developments align with the needs of all Victorians. Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
