Waterloo Council Urgently Seeks Input on Encampment By-law Changes
UPDATE: Waterloo Regional Council is urgently calling for public input on proposed changes to the 100 Victoria Street North Site Specific By-law. This special public meeting is set for Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Regional Council chambers located at 150 Frederick Street, Kitchener.
The council’s decision comes as they prepare to address the clearance of the homeless encampment at this site, which is critical for the construction of the new Kitchener Central Transit Hub. Following the by-law’s initial passage on April 23, 2025, mediation efforts that began in November have been paused, with court proceedings scheduled to resume in February 2026. This meeting is pivotal as the council looks to gather community feedback ahead of these crucial court dates.
In a press release, regional officials confirmed that they continue to provide support to the remaining individuals at the encampment. Currently, 24 out of 26 individuals have successfully found alternative housing options with assistance from the Region. Authorities emphasize the importance of community input in shaping the future of this sensitive issue, as many families and individuals are directly impacted.
Following the public meeting, a special council session will take place on Friday, January 9, 2026, starting at 9 a.m. to review the gathered feedback and consider the proposed amendments. This is a critical moment for both residents and the council as they navigate the complexities of homelessness and urban development.
Residents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting to express their thoughts and concerns, ensuring that all voices are heard during this significant decision-making process. As the deadline approaches, the urgency for community engagement has never been more crucial.
