Waterloo Siskins Reclaim Historic Name Ahead of New Season
UPDATE: The Waterloo Siskins are back! In a thrilling announcement, the junior hockey team has officially reclaimed its historic name just days before the start of the 2023-2024 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season. This shift, confirmed by General Manager Brian Huddle, marks a significant return to the roots of the franchise that has a legacy of twelve Sutherland Cups.
Long-time fans will recognize the change as a recommitment to the team’s rich history and community ties. “This was a recommitment back to the history of Waterloo,” Huddle stated during an interview on The Mike Farwell Show. The push for this name change came from passionate alumni who voiced their desire to see the return of the Waterloo Siskins during the team’s 90th celebration in January.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming season, the Siskins are looking to build on last year’s performance, where they finished third in the Western Conference. With several promising off-season signings and returning players, hopes are high for a competitive season ahead.
However, the team is facing an urgent challenge. Huddle revealed that the Siskins are in dire need of billet families for new players joining the team. “We have some guys who are really good hockey players that we’re looking to place into homes as they get ready to move in the next few days,” he emphasized. The Siskins require at least one additional family to help accommodate the influx of talent.
The excitement does not stop there! The Siskins have two pre-season games lined up before officially kicking off the regular season on September 13 against the Komoka Kings. Fans can look forward to the home opener the following night with a traditional Sunday matchup against the London Nationals.
With the name change and a commitment to community, the Waterloo Siskins are set to make a strong impact this season. Stay tuned for updates as the new era unfolds and the team embarks on its quest for championship glory!
