Wauconda Surges Past Grant, Secures Playoff Spot with 43-39 Win

UPDATE: Wauconda Bulldogs have clinched a playoff spot following a thrilling 43-39 victory over Grant on October 6, 2023. Overcoming a 12-point deficit in the first half, Wauconda’s second-half rally showcased their resilience and determination to remain unbeaten at 6-0.
The game, held in Grant, was marked by Wauconda’s impressive comeback as they scored 15 consecutive points to take control early in the third quarter. “I thought we were all right when we were down,” said Wauconda head coach Chris Prostka. “It was a good win against a very good Grant team. We have to eliminate the penalties and clean some things up. It is exciting to qualify for the playoffs.”
Wauconda dominated the ground game, amassing an impressive 415 rushing yards. Leading the charge was Jackson Rudolph, who rushed for 202 yards on 27 carries, scoring two touchdowns. His brother, Brody Rudolph, contributed 99 yards on 15 carries and was pivotal on defense, recovering a fumble. “I am tired but this is a great win,” Brody noted. “It is all worth it.”
Adding to the Bulldogs’ offensive firepower, Cole Koreycanek tallied 93 yards on 11 carries, scoring two touchdowns. He also threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Luke Sickmeir, who caught another touchdown pass from Jake Throstenson and finished with 142 receiving yards on 7 receptions. “I try to catch every pass I can,” Sickmeir said. “It is great to make the playoffs with six wins.”
On the defensive front, Noah Kosiek made a crucial interception, while Vit Stromsky recovered an onside kick that led to yet another touchdown for Wauconda, sealing their victory.
Grant, now at 4-2 overall, received standout performances from senior running back Tyler Zdon, who rushed for 173 yards on 16 carries and scored a 35-yard touchdown. Zdon also caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Gipson, who completed 11-of-18 passes for 218 yards and 3 touchdowns. “Tyler is a special player,” said Grant coach Tim Norwood. “He is just a great player who can run and catch.”
Norwood praised his team’s effort despite the loss: “The core value of our team is great effort. The kids never gave up. We have to execute better against a great team like Wauconda.”
