BREAKING: The Western Manitoba Women’s Centre in Brandon has just announced a significant boost in funding of $100,000 during its grand opening at 1233 Rosser Ave. This urgent investment, confirmed by Glen Simard, the provincial Municipal and Northern Relations Minister, aims to enhance safety and support for women and gender-diverse individuals in the community.

During the October 26, 2023 ceremony, Simard emphasized the importance of this funding, stating it will facilitate the creation of welcoming environments for those in need. “Every department in government has a contribution to make to the Mino’Ayaawag Ikwewag Strategy, which is ‘All Women Doing Well’,” he noted after the ribbon-cutting.

The funding comes from the province’s “From the Ground Up — Safe Healthy Communities for All” program, designed to support renovations at the new location and improve service offerings. The move from its previous site at 729 Princess Ave was necessary as the centre outgrew its old space, according to Simard.

Nahanni Fontaine, the Provincial Families Minister, attended the opening and shared her enthusiasm for the new facility. She remarked, “The new space is warm and welcoming, allowing staff to deliver their best to women who deserve the best.” Fontaine’s department has committed $245,000 over two years to support operations, including critical services like sexual assault counselling and the Empowered Traditions program for Indigenous women.

The revitalized centre, now devoid of the word ‘resource’ in its name, reflects a broader mission. Director of Counselling and Advocacy Kim Ewasiuk articulated that the centre aims to provide “a space of beauty and dignity” for their clients, reinforcing their commitment to comprehensive support across western Manitoba.

With a dedicated team of 11 staff members, including a newly hired child and youth counsellor, the centre is poised to expand its reach. Ewasiuk highlighted the availability of free services, including counselling for gender-based violence and family law assistance, as crucial for the community.

The centre also features a commercial kitchen, enabling the team to run a breakfast program that served 950 people in the last fiscal year. Program coordinator Leanne Bone expressed excitement about the kitchen’s potential, stating, “Food is medicine, and it brings people together.”

As part of their rebranding, the centre will kick off the Empowered Traditions program with a community feast scheduled for next Wednesday at noon, showcasing their commitment to cultural reconnection through hands-on activities.

This urgent funding and the opening of the new centre mark a pivotal moment for the Western Manitoba Women’s Centre, which continues to adapt and expand its services to meet the needs of the community. The team is eager to welcome clients into this new space, a significant step forward in their mission to support women and gender-diverse individuals.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the centre begins its new chapter in Brandon.
