Wheat Kings Clinch Pre-Season Victory with 3-2 Win Over Broncos
URGENT UPDATE: The Brandon Wheat Kings capped off their pre-season with a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Swift Current Broncos at Tundra Oil and Gas Place on September 30, 2023. Rookie forward Chase Surkan was the star of the night, scoring twice to lead his team to their third consecutive win.
The Wheat Kings, finishing the pre-season with a record of 3-1-0-0, showcased their potential just days before the regular season kicks off. This decisive win marks a critical step for the team, who will face the Moose Jaw Warriors in their opening game on Friday.
Surkan opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the second period on a power play, with Jaxon Jacobson providing the assist. Swift Current quickly equalized, but Surkan struck again, netting his second goal of the night at 10:43 into the period, following a beautiful setup from Jordan Gavin.
Wheat Kings head coach Marty Murray praised the team’s performance, calling it their most complete game of the pre-season. “I think it had a better feel,” he noted, emphasizing the improvement in defensive play and overall team effort. The game remained competitive, with the Broncos pulling within a goal late in the third period, but the Wheat Kings held on for the win.
The match saw a total of 29 saves from goalie Hudson Perry, while Swift Current’s Aiden Eskit stopped 28 shots. Both teams had opportunities, but the Wheat Kings capitalized on key moments, including a crucial save from Perry in the final seconds.
“This game felt different,” said Surkan. “We played hard for a full 60 minutes.” His confidence shone through as he led the team in pre-season scoring with five goals.
Looking ahead, the Wheat Kings now face tough roster decisions before the regular season begins, as several players have impressed during training camp. Murray acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “There are going to be some tough decisions here in the next day or two.”
As excitement builds for the upcoming season, fans eagerly anticipate the Wheat Kings’ performance against the Moose Jaw Warriors, set to take place at their home arena. The team aims to carry this momentum into the regular season and prove their readiness for the challenges ahead.
