Wheaton Warrenville South Triumphs Over Glenbard North 35-28
BREAKING: Wheaton Warrenville South secured a thrilling 35-28 victory against Glenbard North on October 6, 2023, marking a significant win in the DuKane Conference during their home opener at Red Grange Field. Senior running back Owen Yorke was the star of the night, scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 204 yards on 23 carries.
The game kicked off with an explosive start as Glenbard North’s Zachariah Morris caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Melody, putting the Panthers ahead 7-0. Yorke responded quickly, tying the game with a 36-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jacob MacHoll. “We wanted to try to put some points on the board early,” Yorke stated, highlighting his first varsity pass attempt.
“This was a night to showcase Owen’s talent,” said Tigers coach Sean Norris. “We trust him to make big plays, and he proved that on the field.”
The defensive plays were just as impactful. Senior linebacker Amare Williams intercepted a pass and scored a pick-six, giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead. “It’s just so special,” Williams said, reflecting on the moment. “I’m proud to put points on the board for our defense.”
Later in the second quarter, Yorke extended the lead to 21-7 with a 30-yard touchdown run after a critical fourth down catch by junior tight end Jacob Bellows. Yorke praised his offensive line, saying, “A lot of preparation goes into it… the final solidified group has finally come together.”
Glenbard North fought back with senior defensive back William Cook Lesley intercepting a Tiger pass and running back Donato Gatses scoring a touchdown from the 2-yard line, narrowing the gap to 21-14 just before halftime.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle, with Yorke scoring again on a 33-yard run. The Panthers’ Melody and Morris contributed additional scores, but a crucial defensive stand by WW South late in the game secured their victory. Williams deflected a key fourth down pass, showcasing the Tigers’ resilience.
“We had to rise to the occasion,” Norris emphasized about his defense. “That’s what you need to be a good football team.”
With this win, Wheaton Warrenville South improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Tigers are now preparing for their next challenge against Wheaton North next week, eager to continue their momentum. “The whole town comes out and embraces that,” Norris remarked about their home field advantage.
This victory not only boosts the Tigers’ morale but also strengthens community ties, promising an exciting season ahead.
