Wiarton Willie Predicts Weather: Groundhog Day 2026 Live on Feb. 2
URGENT UPDATE: The countdown is on for February 2, 2026, when Wiarton Willie, Ontario’s beloved groundhog, will make his highly anticipated weather prediction! As temperatures plunge across the province, Ontarians are eager to see if Willie will forecast an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
This unique event, part of a quirky North American tradition, draws crowds to Wiarton to witness the moment when Willie emerges from his burrow. Folklore suggests that if he sees his shadow, winter will linger, but if not, spring is on the way. The Groundhog Day prediction has become a cherished celebration, especially significant this year as it marks the 70th anniversary of Willie’s forecasts.
Danielle Edwards, manager of economic development for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, stated, “Willie’s annual appearance is a moment people genuinely look forward to, whether they’re attending in person or watching from afar.” This sentiment underscores the event’s role in fostering community spirit and wintertime joy.
The live stream of the prediction will be available on the official Wiarton Willie Festival social media channels, allowing fans worldwide to tune in and join the festivities from the comfort of their homes.
The history of Groundhog Day dates back to the Pennsylvania Dutch community in 1887, evolving from older traditions like Candlemas, where animals were believed to predict the weather based on their shadows. Wiarton Willie began his forecasting journey in 1957, when local joker Mac McKenzie sought to enliven winter in his hometown.
Edwards explains that Willie is cared for year-round in a climate-controlled environment, monitored by veterinarians to ensure his health. “Updates and videos of Willie are often shared on the festival’s dedicated social media pages so the public can see how he’s doing,” she added.
The Wiarton Willie 2026 Festival kicks off on January 30, culminating in the prediction event on February 2. Celebrations will take place at the future town hall location, drawing visitors and media coverage from across Canada and beyond.
Other groundhogs, like Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia and Fred la marmotte in Quebec, will also provide their predictions, making Groundhog Day a festive occasion nationwide.
As the anticipation builds, keep an eye on social media for updates and live coverage. What will Wiarton Willie predict? Tune in to find out and be part of this delightful Canadian tradition!
