Willowbrook Warriors Secure Third Place with 30-0 Victory

UPDATE: The Willowbrook Warriors triumphed in a decisive 30-0 victory over Perspectives in the state flag football third-place game held on July 15, 2023. This victory not only marked a remarkable rebound after a tough semifinal loss but also capped off a historic season for the Warriors, concluding with an impressive 22-1 record.
Right after the game, the Warriors gathered at the 50-yard line, reflecting on their journey. Coach Rachel Karos emphasized the heart and determination her players displayed throughout the season. “It’s bittersweet because I think we had higher expectations,” Karos stated. “We had a heartbreaking loss, but we bounced back. I’m super proud that we finished strong.”
Willowbrook’s dominant performance against Perspectives was fueled by a standout showing from senior quarterback Marli Smrz, who completed 17-of-31 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. “I’m happy to end my career with a victory,” Smrz said, highlighting the team’s potential for next season.
The Warriors took control early, showcasing their big-play offense and relentless defense, which recorded three interceptions during the game. Notable contributions came from junior Jada Langston, who caught 10 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, and junior Mckenzie Edison, who tallied seven receptions for 90 yards.
“Having Marli throwing the ball is amazing,” Langston remarked, praising the team’s hard work throughout the offseason. “We worked so hard, and it’s incredible to be part of such a great team.” Edison echoed Langston’s sentiments, stating, “We all have to lock in during summer training… I’m proud of everyone.”
The Warriors’ defensive unit was equally impressive, with Leigh Bernardo leading the charge by pulling a team-high seven flags and recording two sacks. The team’s ability to regroup after a difficult semifinal loss to Young, where they fell 12-6, speaks volumes about their resilience.
As the Warriors celebrate their success and reflect on a season filled with growth and achievement, the focus swiftly shifts to the future. Coach Karos has already set her sights on next year’s championship aspirations. “The work for next year starts tomorrow. We want to get back here,” she affirmed.
The emotional weight of the season is palpable, especially for the seniors like Smrz, who expressed her nostalgia for the field. “I’ve grown up on this turf… I’m going to miss it a lot,” she shared, emphasizing the bonds formed and the memories created over the years.
Willowbrook’s determination to improve and aim for another state experience next season signals a promising future for the Warriors. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see how this victorious spirit translates into motivation for the upcoming year.
