Windsor Symphony Orchestra Honors Maestro Robert Franz Tonight

URGENT UPDATE: The Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) honored the late Maestro Robert Franz during their opening night on October 14, 2023, following his death from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on September 2. The evening featured a heartfelt tribute, showcasing Franz’s enduring impact on the orchestra and the community.
As the orchestra performed Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite—a piece beloved by Franz—photos of the maestro illuminated the stage at the historic Capitol Theatre. An audience of over 500 attendees gathered to celebrate his legacy, a testament to his profound influence over more than a decade as the WSO’s music director.
“Robert had a passion for music education and outreach, leaving a legacy for generations of music lovers to come,” stated Kyle Kootstra, a member of the WSO Board of Directors. In a touching gesture, red bows adorned each music stand, symbolizing Franz’s favorite color and his everlasting spirit.
During the tribute, the orchestra’s guest conductor, Carl Topilow, expressed deep emotional ties, stating,
“Robert and I were very, very close friends and colleagues. We feel his spirit here, and it’s important for us to continue the fantastic tradition and legacy that he started.”
Topilow recalled their long friendship, highlighting a significant moment when Franz filled in for him at the National Repertory Orchestra while Topilow was abroad to adopt a child.
Franz’s impact on the upcoming season remains tangible. Despite battling cancer, he meticulously planned the season and aided in selecting guest conductors. The musical guidance he provided will resonate throughout the year as the orchestra continues to perform works he cherished.
The tribute not only honored Franz but also marked a new beginning for the WSO. With the emotional weight of remembrance, the orchestra is poised to continue delivering exceptional performances. The opening weekend will feature another performance on October 15 at 2:30 p.m., also dedicated to the late maestro.
As the WSO embarks on this new season, the memory of Robert Franz remains a poignant reminder of the power of music to unite and inspire. His legacy will undoubtedly echo in the hearts of musicians and audiences alike, continuing to shape the future of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
