Winnipeg Company Fined $70K Following Worker’s Fatal Accident
URGENT UPDATE: A Winnipeg-based company has been fined a total of $70,000 after a tragic incident led to the death of a worker in July 2022. Wintec Building Services, which specializes in excavation, asphalt paving, and property maintenance, faced legal action after a worker suffered fatal injuries from a fall into an unguarded radiator fan blade.
The penalty consists of a $50,000 fine, alongside an additional $20,000 earmarked for public education on occupational safety and health, according to a recent news release from the Manitoba provincial authorities. This decision highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures in workplaces across the region.
In a plea made on January 27, Wintec admitted to failing in its responsibility to ensure safety when machine safeguards were either removed or rendered ineffective. The incident was thoroughly investigated by Workplace Safety and Health officials, who confirmed that proper protective measures were not in place, leading to the fatality.
Authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to safety regulations, especially in industries where heavy machinery is utilized. The devastating loss of a worker serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present in the workplace and the critical need for stringent safety protocols.
As Wintec faces the consequences of this incident, the province urges other companies to review their safety practices to prevent similar tragedies. Information regarding safety orders, penalties, and convictions is available on the Manitoba Labour and Immigration website, reinforcing the importance of compliance with workplace safety standards.
This incident also follows a pattern, as local officials continue to investigate safety practices within various companies in the area. Just recently, two other Winnipeg businesses were fined $20,000 each for injuries sustained by employees, underscoring the ongoing challenges within workplace safety.
Stay tuned for further updates as more details emerge regarding this case and its implications for workplace safety in Manitoba. The ongoing concern for employee safety remains paramount, and the community continues to rally for change.
