URGENT UPDATE: Winnipeg is bracing for a harsh winter, and the need for winter clothing donations is surging faster than supply can meet. As of Friday, United Way Winnipeg reported an alarming 533 requests for winter gear that remain unfilled. With temperatures dropping, the community is urged to respond immediately.

“We’re never short on people seeking items, and once the weather gets colder we’ll see another big jump of orders come in,” said Hillary Gair, senior manager of engagement initiatives at United Way Winnipeg. The charity anticipates a significant spike in requests when the first snow falls, which typically plunges demand into overdrive.

United Way Winnipeg’s Koats for Kids initiative, which runs from September to January, has already seen a concerning uptick in requests compared to previous years. Last year alone, they distributed 6,000 items of winter clothing to those in need.

Donations can include essential winter gear such as boots, jackets, tuques, mittens, scarves, and ski pants. Gair emphasized the impact of even a single contribution: “Even if someone just has one coat and they’re not sure if they want to drop it off, that one coat could mean that one kid going to school can be comfortable and warm.”

The Koats for Kids program relies heavily on volunteers to sort through donations, launder items, and repair clothing as necessary. Heather Quinn, a recently retired teacher who volunteers weekly, expressed the emotional rewards of giving back: “Just because you can’t afford a coat, doesn’t mean you deserve a horrible coat. You see the fruits of what you’re doing.”

Quinn shared a recent experience where her connection to Koats for Kids enabled her to assist a mother and her baby in need. “We got the mother a coat and a snowsuit for the baby,” she recounted, highlighting the profound impact of community support.

Donations are being accepted at several locations throughout Winnipeg, including Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service stations, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, Access Storage, and Toys “R” Us. Those in need of winter gear are encouraged to reach out through their child’s school, daycare, or a local social service agency.

This urgent call for help comes as winter approaches. With temperatures expected to drop significantly, the time to act is now. Community members are encouraged to dig into their closets and contribute to a cause that warms hearts and helps those in need.
