Winnipeg Launches Urgent Snowplow Naming Contest for Residents
UPDATE: Winnipeg has just launched an exciting snowplow naming contest, inviting residents of all ages to submit creative names for 12 heavy snow-clearing machines. The city announced this engaging initiative on Thursday, aiming to connect the community with winter operations.
Mayor Scott Gillingham emphasized the fun and educational aspect of the contest during an interview with CBC Manitoba. “What a fun way to just get kids involved,” he said, referencing similar traditions in other cities, including Scotland, which began this trend in 2006. Names like “Gritney Spears” and “You’re a Blizzard, Harry” have already captured attention in previous contests.
Entries are now open and will remain so until December 5, 2023. Participants can submit their name ideas online, with the top 30 entries in each category scheduled to be revealed on December 8, 2023. Following this, a final online vote will allow all Winnipeggers to select their favorites until December 25, 2023. Winners will be announced in early January 2024.
The contest isn’t just for individual residents; classrooms are encouraged to submit team names for a group of walk-behind push-plows. As an added incentive, the winning classroom will be treated to a pizza party at city hall with Mayor Gillingham himself.
The initiative aims to enhance community spirit while also providing a lighthearted approach to essential winter services. As Winnipeg awaits the winter season, this contest offers a unique opportunity for residents to engage with their local government and make their mark on the city’s snow-clearing fleet.
Residents are urged to act quickly—get your creative juices flowing and submit your snowplow name ideas before the deadline! Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of Winnipeg’s winter fun and potentially see your name on a snow-clearing vehicle this season!
