Winnipeg Police Urge Safety as School Zones Reopen Sept. 1
URGENT UPDATE: As summer rapidly comes to an end, Winnipeg police are emphasizing safety for students and drivers as school zones will be back in effect starting September 1. Authorities are calling on everyone to remain vigilant, urging both pedestrians and drivers to pay close attention while navigating these areas.
In an exclusive interview with 680 CJOB’s The Start, Const. Bryan Foltz highlighted simple yet crucial safety tips: “Look both ways and stay off your phone.” The message couldn’t be clearer as children return to their routines, and parents play a vital role in ensuring their kids understand the importance of road safety.
“Kids often get distracted by their cellphones while playing games and might not notice their surroundings,” Foltz cautioned. “It’s important to be ‘eyes-up’—especially in crosswalks.” He emphasized the necessity for pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers to confirm they are seen. “That way you know they’re seeing you and you’re seeing them,” he stated, adding that even if pedestrians have the right of way, they should never underestimate the danger posed by vehicles weighing between 2,000-3,000 pounds.
With the reinstatement of school zones comes a strict speed limit of 30 km/h, and drivers who fail to comply can face significant penalties. As the new school year approaches, police are preparing for an influx of traffic in these designated areas, and safety remains paramount.
The stakes are high; a momentary lapse in judgment can lead to tragic consequences. “Don’t let a momentary lapse of judgement lead to a lifetime of regret,” Foltz warned, stressing that both drivers and pedestrians must take responsibility to ensure a safe return to school.
As September 1 approaches, residents of Winnipeg are urged to adjust their habits accordingly. Increased awareness and adherence to safety measures can make a substantial difference in keeping children safe on their journeys to and from school.
Stay tuned for more updates as police and community leaders continue to promote safety in the lead-up to the school year.
