Winnipeg Unveils New Basketball Court and Playground Today
BREAKING NEWS: Winnipeg has just opened a state-of-the-art basketball court and playground at the Northwood Community Centre, located at 1415 Burrows Ave. The official unveiling took place on Saturday, October 21, 2023, marking a significant addition to the city’s recreational facilities.
The new project, with a total budget of approximately $604,000, features not only the basketball court but also new playground equipment, seating areas, and asphalt pathways. Funding for the initiative came from various sources: $149,000 from the federal government, $230,000 from the provincial government, and $225,000 from the city itself.
Kevin Lamoureux, parliamentary secretary and MP for Winnipeg North, expressed excitement over the new facilities, stating, “The new basketball court and playground at Northwood Community Centre will give kids and families a safe, accessible space to gather, play and stay active for years to come.”
City councillor Vivian Santos also highlighted the collaborative effort, saying, “With support from all three levels of government, this project shows what we can achieve when we work together to invest in vibrant, inclusive spaces.”
In a unique addition, a vibrant mural has been painted on the court, featuring the word “welcome” in Ojibwe, Cree, Dakota, and Michif. This artwork was created in partnership with students and alumni from Sisler High School and local artist Jonato Dalayoan, aiming to honor the land the court occupies.
The facility also includes new backboards, rims, and regulation game lines, thanks to contributions from the non-profit organization Buckets & Borders, in collaboration with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and TelPay. Justin Lee, CEO and co-founder of Buckets & Borders, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Winnipeg has become one of our favourite cities, and because of long-standing partnerships like these, we get to continue to grow the game of basketball in a city that truly loves the game.”
Community leader Marsha Missyabit, Kookum for the Winnipeg School Division, emphasized the positive impact of the new facilities, saying, “The community will grow in areas of developing their pride, teamwork, playing fair and healthy attitudes. Physical activity develops healthy bodies, strengthens our minds, and provides the outlet to feel good. This playground and basketball court will bring the community together.”
With the grand opening today, families and children are encouraged to visit the Northwood Community Centre to experience these new recreational amenities firsthand. The community is buzzing with anticipation, and residents are eager to embrace this new space dedicated to health, teamwork, and fun.
Stay tuned for more updates as the community comes alive at this newly unveiled facility!
