URGENT UPDATE: A winter storm warning has been issued for central and northern Manitoba as of Monday morning, January 29, 2024. Snowfall amounts are expected to reach between 10 to 30 centimetres, creating hazardous conditions for residents and travelers alike.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) warns that rain has transitioned to snow across all areas under this alert. Northerly winds are gusting up to 60 km/h, which will severely reduce visibility due to blowing snow. As a result, highway closures are almost certain, posing a significant risk for those on the road.

According to Manitoba 511, several major routes are already affected. Highway 391 from Nelson House to Thompson, Highway 280 from Thompson to Split Lake, and Highway 6 from Thompson to Highway 39 are currently closed due to “poor winter driving conditions.” Travelers are advised to stay updated and avoid non-essential travel.

ECCC has also issued a warning that accumulated snow combined with strong winds could lead to damage to trees and other structures. Residents are urged to prepare for potential power outages and to secure any loose outdoor items.

This winter storm is expected to impact daily life significantly across the region. Authorities recommend residents remain indoors whenever possible and keep emergency supplies on hand. Monitoring local news and weather updates will be crucial for staying informed about the evolving situation.

As the storm develops, officials will continue to provide updates. Watch for further announcements from ECCC and local authorities as conditions change. Stay safe, Manitoba!
