WNBA Returns to Vancouver This Summer with New Teams!
UPDATE: The WNBA is officially returning to Vancouver this summer, set to host two highly anticipated games featuring the league’s newest teams. The announcement was confirmed today as part of the WNBA’s newly released schedule for the 2026 season.
Vancouver’s Rogers Arena will come alive on August 19 when the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire face off in a historic matchup. This follows the success of last summer’s inaugural game, which saw an impressive 15,892 fans fill the arena for a thrilling contest between the Seattle Storm and the Atlanta Dream. The excitement culminated in a nail-biting finish, with the Storm edging out the Dream 80-78.
Just two days later, on August 21, the Toronto Tempo will host the defending WNBA Finals champion, the Las Vegas Aces, in a showdown that promises to electrify fans. Monica Wright Rogers, general manager of the Tempo and former WNBA player, emphasized the team’s commitment to expanding women’s basketball in Canada, stating, “This is so much more than a team. It’s a movement to grow the game of women’s basketball in Canada.”
In a strategic move to boost the sport’s profile, the Tempo will play seven of its 22 home games outside of their primary venue in Toronto, which includes matches at the Bell Centre in Montreal and the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The back-to-back games in Vancouver are particularly significant, as they represent a growing interest in women’s sports across the nation.
Fans are eager for the return of WNBA action, and with ticket sales yet to be announced, the demand is expected to surge. Interested attendees are encouraged to visit the Tempo website for pre-sale information. If the turnout matches last year’s enthusiasm, Vancouver could be a strong contender for a permanent WNBA franchise in the future.
With the WNBA’s presence growing in Canada, this summer’s games are not just about competition; they symbolize a vibrant movement towards greater visibility and support for women’s basketball. As fans mark their calendars for these pivotal dates, the excitement is palpable—and the stakes have never been higher.
