Woman Arrested Again for Alarming Distraction Thefts in Toronto

UPDATE: A woman linked to a notorious distraction theft ring in Toronto has been rearrested, escalating concerns over community safety. Authorities confirmed that 44-year-old Florentina Alexandru was apprehended on the evening of July 27, 2023, following a theft incident near Lawrence Avenue West and Black Creek Drive.
Police report that Alexandru targeted vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, stealing valuable jewelry under deceptive circumstances. The thefts form part of a growing trend in the Greater Toronto Area, where distraction thefts have surged alarmingly this year. This disturbing pattern has prompted law enforcement to issue urgent warnings to community members.
Alexandru was initially arrested last month during an operation that charged her and two accomplices with a total of 11 offenses related to various distraction thefts occurring between June and September. She now faces additional charges, including theft over $5,000 and participating in a criminal organization.
Toronto Police spokespersons have condemned these thefts, calling them both “alarming” and “concerning.” The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially when it involves interactions with older adults.
As the investigation unfolds, police are actively seeking leads on other potential suspects. Officials emphasize that community awareness is crucial in combating such crimes. This latest arrest signals a determined effort by law enforcement to crack down on organized theft operations and protect vulnerable populations.
Residents are encouraged to share information about suspicious behaviors with the police to help safeguard their neighborhoods. With distraction thefts becoming increasingly common, the community’s cooperation is vital.
