Woodstock Officials Confirm FBI Arrest Activity, ICE Not Involved
BREAKING: Woodstock officials confirm recent law enforcement activity involved the FBI but state that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was not present. The incident occurred on August 26 on Church Street, where local police supported FBI agents executing a valid criminal arrest warrant issued by a U.S. Magistrate Judge.
The city released a statement on Thursday afternoon in response to public inquiries and social media speculation regarding the incident. It clarified that no arrests were made during the operation, and the FBI temporarily detained a person resembling the individual named in the warrant.
According to the city, after a brief and lawful investigation, it was confirmed that the individual was not the subject of the warrant and was released immediately at the scene. Officials emphasized the need to address public concerns and misinformation surrounding the event.
“We understand how misinformation can lead to fear and concern. Our priority is maintaining both safety and trust in our community,” said City Manager Roscoe Stelford.
Stelford also highlighted that, under Illinois State law, including the Illinois TRUST Act, the city and its police department do not collaborate with ICE on civil immigration enforcement. This assurance aims to alleviate concerns among residents following the incident.
Mayor Mike Turner echoed Stelford’s sentiments, stating that immigration enforcement is a significant issue nationwide. “Our responsibility is to uphold the law while protecting the rights and dignity of all members of our community, and that commitment remains firm,” Turner added.
This statement comes as communities grapple with the implications of federal law enforcement actions. Woodstock officials are committed to transparency as they navigate the complexities of law enforcement and community trust.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged with city communications for further updates. The city aims to keep the community informed, mitigating fear and ensuring public safety remains a top priority.
