World Trauma Day Event in Crystal Lake Focuses on Healing Stories

UPDATE: The McHenry County Mental Health Board is hosting a pivotal event on October 17, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake, aimed at transforming narratives around trauma. As World Trauma Day approaches, the theme “From Shadow to Light: Reclaiming Your Story” underscores the urgent need for public awareness and education on trauma’s impact.
Licensed professional counselor and trauma-informed coordinator, Gary Rukin, will lead this free, in-person event, which is open to the public. Attendees can expect insightful presentations focusing on the power of storytelling in healing trauma and overcoming stigma. Rukin emphasizes, “It’s time to learn how changing your story changes everything.”
The event is designed to equip participants with narrative techniques that foster agency and promote healing. Mental health professionals attending can also earn continuing education units. Registration is required to secure a spot.
World Trauma Day, observed annually on October 17, brings awareness to the devastating effects of traumatic injuries, which claim more lives among individuals under 45 than diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. According to recent data, traumatic injuries account for over 9% of global deaths, highlighting the urgent need for education and intervention.
The McHenry County Mental Health Board plays a crucial role in providing resources and support for individuals and families facing mental health challenges. The organization encourages community members to download the MCHELP app for immediate assistance with mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
In an effort to further support those in crisis, the 988 crisis lifeline is available 24/7, offering free and confidential help through calls, texts, or online chats.
This event is not just about awareness; it’s a call to action for individuals to reclaim their stories and seek help. With trauma affecting countless lives, the McHenry County Mental Health Board aims to illuminate paths to recovery and resilience.
