Wrong-Way Driver Nearly Collides with Delivery Truck in Kelowna
UPDATE: An alarming incident unfolded in Kelowna on August 27, as a wrong-way driver narrowly avoided a collision with a delivery truck around 2:45 p.m.. Walter Laskowski, who operates a 5-tonne truck for his commercial delivery business, was traveling southbound on Leckie Road when the black pickup truck careened through traffic lights and into the left turning lane.
The pickup truck, reportedly ignoring traffic rules, continued heading northbound without slowing down, alarming Laskowski and other drivers in the vicinity. This close call occurred just as Kelowna implements a new median on southbound Leckie at Highway 97, part of the Leckie Road Active Transportation Corridor (ATC) project, which aims to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Laskowski, who frequently witnesses dangerous driving conditions in Kelowna, expressed concern over the increasing number of wrong-way drivers on local roads. “This isn’t an isolated incident; I see it far too often,” he remarked. Laskowski has documented several near-misses with his dash cam, one of which gained significant attention on TikTok, amassing over 140,000 views and more than 4,000 likes.
This incident raises urgent questions about road safety and driver behavior in Kelowna. With the ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving accessibility, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report reckless driving. As authorities continue to monitor traffic patterns, Laskowski’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road.
Authorities are investigating the incident further, and local drivers are encouraged to report any similar occurrences. As road safety becomes an increasing concern, community members are urged to advocate for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent future incidents.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Kelowna takes steps to enhance road safety for all its residents.
