Xpeng Surges Past Sales Goals as BYD Struggles in China

URGENT UPDATE: Xpeng Inc. is breaking records in China’s electric vehicle (EV) market, achieving year-to-date deliveries of 271,615 units, more than triple its sales from the same period in 2024. This surge comes as industry giant BYD Co. faces challenges, with experts now predicting it may fall short of its shipment target of 5.5 million vehicles this year.
Xpeng’s remarkable success is largely attributed to the launch of its affordable MONA M03 model last August, priced at just 119,800 yuan ($16,800). This entry-level EV is not only competing against mass-market options from BYD and Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. but is also leveraging Xpeng’s renowned intelligent technologies. The MONA M03 has quickly become a bestseller, contributing to approximately 40% of Xpeng’s monthly sales.
The financial impact is significant for Xpeng, as the company reported a narrowed net loss in the second quarter while gross margins improved to 17.3%. Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng expressed optimism during a recent earnings call, stating that the company anticipates monthly deliveries to consistently exceed 40,000 units starting this September.
Adding to this momentum, Xpeng introduced a revamped version of its P7 sedan last week, aiming to accelerate product cycles. Analysts from HSBC Holdings Plc predict that this refresh will enhance Xpeng’s market position.
In a strategic move, Xpeng has also expanded its collaboration with Volkswagen AG on August 14, focusing on electronic and electrical architecture for the German automaker’s combustion engine and plug-in hybrid platforms in China. This partnership is expected to generate additional software service revenue with substantial profit margins.
Other smaller EV makers are also gaining ground. Zhejiang Leapmotor Technologies Ltd. reported a staggering 88% year-on-year increase in monthly deliveries, reaching 57,066 vehicles in August. Consumers are flocking to purchase affordable models like the B10 and C10, which feature advanced intelligent technologies similar to those found in Xpeng’s lineup.
As boutique brands gain traction, BYD faces mounting pressure. Analysts at Sanford C. Bernstein now estimate that BYD’s shipments may only reach 5.1 million units this year. The shifting dynamics in the EV market highlight the growing popularity of budget-friendly, technology-rich vehicles, with consumer preferences rapidly evolving.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops. Xpeng and other smaller players continue to reshape the landscape of China’s EV market, leaving BYD to navigate a challenging road ahead.
