Young Driver Arrested After Stolen Vehicle Incident in Ontario

UPDATE: A 21-year-old man from London, Ontario is facing serious legal consequences following a chaotic series of events involving a stolen vehicle early this morning. At approximately 3:37 a.m. on July 17, 2023, the Sault Ste. Marie OPP responded to reports of a stolen vehicle from the Searchmont Community Centre and Fire Hall.
Authorities report that as officers were en route, volunteer firefighters located the stolen vehicle abandoned in a ditch along Highway 532, near Station Road. Upon arrival, police determined the driver to be impaired by an unknown substance and transported him to the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment for further testing.
This incident escalated when police discovered that the same driver was involved in a prior police pursuit just the day before. Multiple citizens had reported a vehicle driving erratically at high speeds and ignoring construction zone signals on Highway 17 between Huron Shores and Goulais River.
In a shocking twist, the driver, identified as Blake Collings, provided officers with someone else’s driver’s license during the investigation. After confirming his true identity, authorities found that Collings was prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
Collings was arrested and charged with several offenses, including impaired driving and providing false identification. He is currently held for a bail hearing and has been remanded into custody, awaiting his next court date. Additionally, he has received a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension.
None of the allegations have been tested in court, and Collings is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This urgent situation underscores the ongoing issues of impaired driving and vehicle theft in the region, making it a significant public safety concern.
As the investigation continues, local authorities urge anyone with further information regarding this incident to come forward. Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
