YouTube Cracks Down: Flags Family Plans Without Same Address

URGENT UPDATE: YouTube is enforcing its ‘same household’ rule for Premium family plans, impacting users immediately. Accounts that do not share a residential address are being flagged, and access will be paused in just 14 days.

The popular family plan, which allows up to five members to share a Premium subscription for only $22.99/month, has been widely utilized by friends and social groups to slash costs. In contrast, the individual Premium plan costs $13.99/month, making the family option a significant savings of over 65% per person.

However, YouTube is now taking action. Users are receiving emails titled “Your YouTube Premium family membership will be paused,” informing them that their membership is under review. The email states, “Your YouTube Premium family membership requires all members to be in the same household as the family manager. It appears you may not be in the same household as your family manager.”

This crackdown comes as YouTube aims to ensure that the family plan is utilized as intended—specifically for those living together. The enforcement is currently reported by Android Police to be rolling out in limited regions and is affecting specific accounts.

For those impacted, YouTube has provided a pathway to appeal the flagging. Users can contact support for verification of their eligibility to remain on the family plan.

As this situation develops, subscribers must act quickly. If flagged, users will still be part of their family group but will lose access to Premium benefits, reverting back to ad-supported viewing.

Stay tuned for further updates as YouTube continues to implement this significant policy change. The urgency to confirm your household status could mean the difference between keeping your Premium benefits or switching to an individual plan.
