Yukon First Nation Leader Cynthia James Launches MLA Bid with Liberals
UPDATE: Cynthia James, the director of First Nation partnerships at the Yukon Development Corporation, has just announced her candidacy for the Yukon Legislative Assembly with the Liberal Party. This urgent bid positions her as the first contender from any of the three territorial parties to seek a seat in the recently redrawn Southern Lakes electoral district.
James is launching her campaign with a strong focus on economic growth and social equity. “I am running for the Yukon Liberals because I believe in a future where everyone in the Southern Lakes Yukon has the opportunity to thrive,” she stated. “This is about real, positive change that comes from listening to people, working together, and standing up for Yukon values of fairness, respect, and inclusion.”
The Southern Lakes electoral district is significant, reflecting the region’s diverse needs and aspirations. James has played a pivotal role in the ambitious Yukon-B.C. grid connection project, highlighted by both former Premier Ranj Pillai and current Premier Mike Pemberton as a “nation-building project.” They believe this initiative will enhance infrastructure and economic cooperation across Canada.
As a born-and-raised Yukoner and member of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, James’s intimate knowledge of the community fuels her passion for public service. Her educational background includes a degree in Indigenous governance and a certificate in governance and public administration. James’s extensive experience as a small-business owner and director on the Yukon University Foundation board illustrates her commitment to fostering local prosperity.
The urgency of this announcement is underscored by the approaching deadline for the territorial elections, which must be held on or before November 3. With no official date set yet, James’s early candidacy may set a competitive tone for the race ahead.
James also runs an Indigenous economic reconciliation consulting firm, giving her unique insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by her community. Her campaign promises to address local economic needs while ensuring that social programs are available for all residents, emphasizing her vision where no one is left behind.
As the political landscape in Yukon begins to shift, all eyes will be on James and her potential impact on the Southern Lakes electoral district. The call for real change in Yukon resonates deeply, and James’s commitment to community engagement may position her as a formidable candidate in the upcoming election.
Stay tuned for more updates as the election date approaches and more candidates announce their intentions to run.
